Annaleigh Ashford professional journey began right after her graduation, landing her the role of Glinda in the First National Tour of Wicked. She joined the production in 2005 and departed the following year.
2004–2009: Initial roles and debut on Broadway
In 2004, while frequenting the club scene in New York City’s Lower East Side, Ashford encountered nightlife figure Lady Starlight, a local rock DJ and performance artist.
Lady Starlight invited her to dance at the 1970s glitter rock event “Lady Starlight’s English Disco,” and affectionately renamed her Hollywood Star.
In 2005, Ashford appeared as Natalie in Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey’s Feeling Electric during the New York Musical Theatre Festival.
Shortly after finishing her college studies, Ashford landed a significant role as one of Glinda’s companions, Pfanne, while also serving as Glinda’s understudy on Wicked’s first national tour.
Her initial involvement with the cast began in December 2005 and concluded in September 2006. Subsequently, she took on the part of Margot in Legally Blonde: The Musical, marking her Broadway debut.

Ashford portrayed Jeanie in the Broadway revival of Hair, taking over the role from Kacie Sheik from March 9, 2010, until the show’s closure on June 27, 2010.
In September 2010, she made her debut as a director at Birdland Jazz Club, guiding her fellow Hair cast member Jay Armstrong Johnson during his first solo concert. The event received outstanding reviews, highlighting Ashford’s “well-crafted” approach to directing.

On July 14, 2016, it was announced that Ashford would perform alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in three concert shows of Sunday in the Park with George in October at New York City Center, taking on the role of Dot/Marie, originally played by Bernadette Peters on Broadway.
On December 13, 2016, it was confirmed that Ashford would again play Dot/Marie alongside Gyllenhaal in the 10-week Broadway revival of Sunday in the Park with George at the Hudson Theater.
Ashford was not eligible for a Tony Award for this performance because the production opted out of award consideration, including the Tony Awards.
A statement was issued on February 3, 2017, indicating that the producers of Sunday in the Park with George would not be putting forward Hudson Theatre’s staging of this New York City Center production for award considerations.
