Unfaithful 2002 Storyline
Edward and Connie Sumner reside in the affluent Westchester County, New York, alongside their 8-year-old son, Charlie. While out shopping in SoHo, a gust of wind causes Connie to collide with a man named Paul Martel, resulting in both of them falling down. At his home, Paul tends to her leg, applying ice, and places his hand on hers. Connie reveals only her first name to him. Paul urges Connie to take a book with her as she departs, highlighting a specific excerpt about taking advantage of opportunities.
His contact information is included in the book. Later, Connie reaches out to him from Grand Central Terminal. Paul asks her to visit, and they share flirtatious moments once more. During her third trip, they engage in dancing and intimacy. Connie keeps coming up with reasons to see Paul again. Edward becomes wary when he discovers Connie’s satin underwear and catches her in a falsehood. He terminates an employee for what he perceives as disloyalty. This employee, who had observed Connie with Paul, advises Edward to reflect on his own family.

Edward hires a private investigator, and he is heartbroken to receive photos that confirm the infidelity. One day, Connie forgets to pick Charlie up from school, realizing her mistake. With Edward away, she tries to call Paul to end their relationship. When he doesn’t answer, she attempts to leave a voicemail, but is disrupted by Charlie. Connie decides it is better to end things with Paul face-to-face. After running some errands, she heads to Paul’s place to deliver the news personally but catches sight of him with another woman. She confronts him, leading to a heated argument.

Connie questions him about how many other women he is involved with. Paul shows no concern for her anger and arrogantly contradicts himself. He insists that the other woman is merely a friend, but Connie sees through his deception. She declares that their affair is finished and expresses her hatred for him. Connie storms out of his apartment in anger, but Paul unexpectedly pursues her and forces his attention upon her. Though she struggles and begs him to stop, Connie realizes she is still drawn to him, and ultimately forgives him.

At this juncture, Connie succumbs to his advances, and Paul successfully wins her back. They then reconcile and engage in passionate intimacy in the hallway. Connie departs, feeling a sense of loss for Edward. Paul opens the door for Edward, who then discovers a snow globe he had gifted to Connie. In a moment of fury, Edward strikes Paul with it, accidentally causing significant injury that leads to Paul’s death. While attempting to dispose of the situation, he hears a voicemail from Connie ending their relationship.

Edward deletes the message and places Paul’s corpse in the trunk of his vehicle before discarding it in a landfill. Detectives from the New York Police Department uncover Connie’s contact information at Paul’s residence and go to visit the Sumners. His estranged spouse has filed a report for his disappearance. Connie expresses her shock at discovering Paul was married, insisting she hardly knew him at all. The authorities return when Paul’s body is subsequently discovered.

At the laundromat, Connie comes across pictures of herself and Paul wearing Edward’s attire. That evening at a gathering, she locates the snow globe amongst their belongings. When she questions Edward, he admits he was aware of her dishonesty the entire time. Edward becomes emotional as he reflects on the effort he put in to provide a better life for both Charlie and her. He then blames her for being unthankful and squandering all he achieved for the sake of an affair. Edward reveals that he had thoughts of killing her instead of Paul.

A few days later, Connie finds a concealed section inside the snow globe, where Edward had tucked away a photo of them with baby Charlie years before, along with a note saying “To My Beautiful Wife, the Best Part of Every Day!” Understanding the depth of his affection for her, she sets the compromising photographs ablaze. Edward mentions he plans to surrender to the authorities, but she protests against it. They go back to living an ordinary life together.
One night, as they drive home, Edward halts at a red traffic light. Connie indulges in a daydream about escaping the country and adopting new identities, to which Edward concurs that it sounds like a great idea. As he comforts her while she sobs, it becomes clear that he has parked beside a police precinct.
