Tessa Virtue began her professional life as an ice dancer. Carol Moir, Moir’s aunt, who was teaching them both at the time, brought her and Moir together. They began skating together in 1997.
They left the Ilderton Skating Club early in their careers to train with Paul MacIntosh and Suzanne Killing in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. Their achievements include winning the pre-novice title at the Canadian Championships in 2001.
She and Moir won a bronze medal at the Canadian Championships in 2002 for novices during the 2001–02 season. They came in seventh place in the junior division at the 2003 Canadian Championships.
