In 1959, Cohen received a Canada Council grant worth $2,000, which enabled him to live frugally in London and on Hydra, a Greek island, while crafting the novel then known as Beauty at Close Quarters. Upon his return to Canada in 1960, his publisher McClelland & Stewart turned it down. Jack McClelland expressed worries regarding the autobiographical nature of the content and deemed the work dull and overly focused on sexual themes.

He proposed substantial changes but did not assure publication after those alterations were completed. Cohen approached publishers in both England and the United States, who asked for a more concise version, prompting him to halve the manuscript. He stated, “anyone with an ear will know I’ve torn apart orchestras to arrive at my straight, melodic line.”

The book was accessible in Canada solely as an import until McClelland & Stewart issued a paperback edition under the New Canadian Library label in 1970. The current edition available in Canada features an afterword written by Paul Quarrington. In 2003, a film version of the novel, directed by Bernar Hebert, was made available.
